Week 4- 8th February
This week we gained access to the video cameras in order to practice filming and experiment with acting as well as camera angles. We were in a group of four and given the brief to produce a short film using at least ten different camera angles/shots.
Week 3- 1st February
Now that I had completed my research of existing music videos, I moved on to looking for the different styles of magazine advertisements and album covers that exist for current and older artists. I tried doing this on the internet, but found it difficult to find secondary sources of music magazine adverts that were good quality. I therefore selected several music magazines, both older and newer issues in order to search for different styles of music advertisements. This took quite a while as not all were suitable as they often followed a very similar pattern. However, eventually I came accross two very different album advertisements which included one for the James Morrison album and one for the monkey journey to the west album. These used very different techniques with the James Morrison advertisement remaining very simple with sepia/saturated tones, whilst the Monkey Journey to the West album used animation charaters in their advert which displayed the characters created by the artist.
Week 2- 25th January
This week I continued looking at existing music videos, with attention being captured by the sinaed o'conner video, nothing compares to you, which causes total artist focus and adds real emotion and meaning into the lyrics she is singing. I also found this with a radiohead video- no surprises. These two artists i found used relatively similar techniques, as although the radiohead video had more stuff going on within it (filling up with water). However, both this videos concentrated solely on the face of the artists, this meaning created within the songs was very effective and I have chosen to try and encorporate this style into my own music video, providing the style of song I eventually choose is suitable. I hope to choose a slower song to show that free running is a more beautiful sport and showing the technical ability in doing it; this song would therefore also suit the focus I am hoping to gain upon the artist.
Week 1- 18th January
This week I am beginning my research into my chosen brief- a music promotion package. I have begun this week by looking at existing music videos on the website youtube.com, this secondary source of information has enabled me to look at different styles of music video that already exist. I already had the thought of potentially using my brothers free running team in some way so decided to look for existing music videos that contain free running, I was very surprised to find only one video for a David Guetta dance track. This further emphasised my desire to use free running in my music video as it has been rarely used.
However, I still researched other types of music videos for further inspiration, ranging from other dance tracks, to rock/indie tracks and slower tracks also. This allowed me to see a variety of different techniques used for different artists as well as the creativity and meanings behind the stories created in the music promotion videos.
